So, you want to be a..... Chef ?

Being a chef is much like being an artist of food. Chefs get to create food that is very tasty and often times beautiful to look at. Although being a chef can be fun and creative, it also involves  a lot of hard, unglamorous work.
Do you think you have what it takes to be a chef?

You get to take ordinary foods, and turn them into edible pieces of artwork!

You get to eat very tasty food.

Being a chef means that you can work in just about anywhere in the world. Since people have to eat, the possibilities of working as a chef are endless. There  are work opportunities in just about every town, country and even places most people can't live, like vacation resorts.

Kitchens can be very fast paced and high energy places, which can be a fun environment in which to work.

If you like being in the limelight, being a chef can bring many opportunities. There are many celebrity chefs that do cooking shows on tv, are in food magazines or start famous, well known restaurants.

The working hours are very long. Typically, a chef works about 10 hours a day. During busy food holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving, they may even go a few weeks without a day off!

People can get very sick and even die from food poisoning if old or contaminated food is served. You must be constantly monitoring all the food in the refridgerators and shelves. A chef has a great responsibility to ensure that the food they are serving is safe. This means that the cooks who work for the chefs need to be trained and constantly supervised as well.

Kitchens can be very fast paced high energy places to work, which can be very stressful.

The chef is ultimately responsible for everything that involves the kitchen. If a dishwasher calls in sick and there is no one else to work, the chef will have to wash dishes.  If one of the cooks messes up on the food, the chef takes responsibility for it.
