Grocery Cart Math By Jaye Hansen
|
Make grocery store trips a fun part of your
school day, with Grocery Cart Math. Students
learn basic math skills through regular trips
to the grocery store. Each section contains
specific activities to do at the store, at
home, and questions to discuss with Mom and
Dad.
Activities increase in difficulty and range
from determining container sizes to using
coupons to comparing price per weight and
brands. This book is ideal for students in the
3rd through 5th grade.
Author's Intro:
"The initial stimulus for this book was the fear of what
others would THINK when I took my own homeschooled
children to the grocery store during regular school hours. I
began devising activities to keep them "busy" in the store,
and soon realized that they were learning skills needed in
real life!
These activities cover a wide range of skills for students in
elementary to middle school grades. The information
necessary for each activity can be gathered by the
students during a weekly shopping trip, with fairly minimal
input from Mom. At the end of many activities, the
children are asked to do or discuss something with their
teacher: a component which will greatly enhance the
students' learning. Some activities allow students to
practice typical math skills, but in a real-life setting.
Others help to develop the skills necessary for smart
shopping, and can help to answer the most often-asked
question: "WHY do we have to know this?"
